Сон объединяет в себе элементы музыки кампесино (фермеров испанского происхождения) с африканскими ритмами и ударными инструментами (музыкой африканских рабов). Он лежит в основе многих известных стилей афро-кубинской танцевальной музыки. В Нью-Йорке сон смешался с другими музыкальными стилями, что повлияло на создание другого направления музыки: сальса. Исполняется маленькими ансамблями, использующими гитару или трес (напоминающий гитару инструмент с тремя парами струн) из испанской традиции, мараки (или «маракасы»), гуиро, клаве и бонго для ритмического аккомпанемента, а для басовых партий — маримбулу или африканское «фортепиано для большого пальца».

"Счастливая Куба" - это великолепное документальное музыкальное кино о прекрасной Кубе и ее песнях, ее ритмах, с участием необыкновенных певцов и певиц, так и не получивших известность, которые обладают сильными и удивительными голосами.
Главный герой этой картины - 76-летний уличный музыкант-кубинец Мигель Дель Моралес, известный под именем Ель Гальо (El Gallo), чей глубокий голос, вобравший в себя дым сигарет и крепость рома, впитавший яркие лучи солнца и дуновения свежего ветра, рассказывает о радостях и горестях его соотечественников.
Вместе со своей гитарой он путешествует по Кубе, поет со своими друзьями, на улице, в барах и во двориках. Он знакомит нас с ритмами прекрасной кубинской музыки и с простыми кубинцами, чьи голоса поражают и вызывают восхищение.
Этот музыкальный фильм-путешествие покажет Кубу такой, какая она есть: безумная, красивая, бедная, но счастливая Куба!

Джазовый пианист Роберто Фонсека родился в Гаване в 1975 году. С ранних лет Фонсека был окружен музыкой: его отец был барабанщиком. Роберто Фонсека, старший, его мать, Мерседес Кортес Альфаро, профессиональная певица (поет в сольном альбоме сына, Замазу), и два его старших сводных брата от предыдущего брака матери с пианистом и музыкантом. Хесус «Чучо» Вальдесом.
После раннего интереса к барабанам, Фонсека переключился на фортепиано в 8 лет, а к 14 уже экспериментировал с сочетанием американского джаза и традиционных кубинских ритмов; впервые выступил в Гаване на Фестиваль Jazz Plaza в 1991 году в возрасте 15 лет. Фонсека учился на Кубе в Instituto Superior de Arte, где он получил степень магистра композиции, хотя часто сам говорит, что учился очень плохо. Получив диплом, он покинул Кубу, чтобы найти свой стиль.

Педро Пабло Васкес Родригес, более известный под своим сценическим псевдонимом Онди Васкес, родился в Гаване, Куба, 4 ноября 1969 года. После 10 лет участия в группе Арсения Родригеса он создает свою группу Los Guardianes del Ritmo, исполняющей композиции в новом музыкальном формате при бережном сохранении культурных традиций национальной музыки. В композициях группы можно услышать болеро, чачачас, гуарачас, гуагуанко и такие ритмы афрокубинской музыки, как кумбия и меренге. Меломаны, преданные кубинской народной музыке, найдут в композициях не только дань уважения тем, кто заложил основы кубинской музыкальной культуры, но и подлинное исполнительское мастерство и особое кубинский вкус к пению и танцам.
