В статье проанализировано состояние российско-кубинских отношений в период после распада СССР. Авторы отмечают, что отношения двух государств претерпели эволюцию, которая редко встречается в международных отношениях. От состояния дружбы и сотрудничества во всех областях при жизни СССР, в 1990-е и 2000-е гг. эти отношения, в основном из-за политики России, стали строиться на сугубо прагматической основе, что значительно объединило их характер и содержание. В российско-кубинских отношениях в качестве доминирующего направления вышло экономическое сотрудничество, основанное только на сырьевой составляющей, что может в перспективе стать, в условиях жесткой конкуренции на мировом рынке, основой затухания всего комплекса отношений

В ноябре 2016 года исполнилось 50 лет со дня визита в Мончегорск президента Республики Куба Освальдо Дортикос Торрадо и члена Политбюро и второго секретаря компартии Кубы, заместителя премьер-министра и министра Революционных вооруженных сил Республики Куба Рауля Кастро Рус.
Визиту кубинских лидеров в Мончегорск предшествовали важные события: кубинская революция и национализация предприятий, правительство Кубы пригласило группу советских специалистов, среди которых были представители комбината «Североникель» (В.Я. Позняков, В.И. Сахаров и другие), для консультаций по вопросам развития никелевого производства.
