В 1951 году поступил во 2-е Московское артиллерийское подготовительное училище. В 1953 году окончил его и был направлен на учебу в Днепропетровское Краснознаменное зенитно-артиллерийское училище. После его окончания был направлен в Группу Советских войск в Германии. Там прослужил 7 лет в зенитно-артиллерийском полку 27-й гвардейской танковой дивизии в должностях командира огневого взвода, старшего офицера батареи. Здесь его застали события 1962 года. Этот период вошел в историю как Карибский кризис. Как вспоминал Владимир Сергеевич, боевая готовность была объявлена по всем Вооруженным Силам. А ГДР, где он служил, была на передовой линии соприкосновения с блоком НАТО. Весь личный состав был готов к открытому столкновению с силами противника. В.С. Лизунов вспоминал: "Направлением главного удара нашей 8 гвардейской армии (бывшая 62 гвардейская Сталинградская армия, которой командовал В.И. Чуйков, генерал –лейтенант) был Ла-Манш, возможный плацдарм высадки войск союзников - США и Англии". Этому событию Владимир Сергеевич посвятил стихотворение "Кубинский кризис". В памяти В.С. Лизунова остались и незабываемые моменты советско-кубинских отношений. Старшее поколение помнит, как в 1964 году на железнодорожном вокзале города Ялта встречали молодое поколение Кубы. Пионеры тех лет скандировали на перроне советские лозунги: «Свободу острову!», «Руки прочь от Кубы!» Эти события описывает стихотворение "Здравствуй, Куба!" К большому сожалению, Владимир Сергеевич ушел из жизни 15 декабря 2010 года.
