Удивительно, но Эртль была дочерью нацистского пропагандиста, бежавшего в Боливию. Она выросла в окружении друзей семьи, связанных с нацистами, таких как шеф гестапо Клаус Барби, известный как «лионский мясник». Британский режиссёр Кевин Макдональд утверждает, что именно Барби организовал убийство Че Гевары. Моника порвала связи со своей фашистской семьёй и сблизилась с коммунистическим движением.
