Несмотря на строжайшую секретность, 14 октября о растущей под боком угрозе узнали в США, и 22 октября Вашингтон ввел морскую блокаду Острова Свободы. В это время к Кубе подходили советские корабли с последними ракетами и контингентом. В результате в Атлантическом океане начинается противостояние американских и советских судов.
