В первый раз – в январе 1963 года, когда советская делегация привезла на Кубу елку, был же Новый год, медвежонка, подарки комсомола, прилетели 1-го января, а 2-ого уже пошли в резиденцию Фиделя и вручили ему подарки, Фидель сразу елку забраковал, слишком колючая, медвежонка тоже, плохо себя повел, стал рычать, такого к детям нельзя допускать. Первоначально планировали передать все подарки, включая елку и медвежонка, в детский сад, организованный Фиделем для детей-сирот. А с Фиделем Вадим Аркадьевичем Саюшев впервые познакомился 1 января 1963 года, когда после торжественного приема вернулись в свой отель Cuba Libre, а в два часа ночи в отель с шумом пришли и Фидель, и Рауль, и Че. На фото (Гавана, 1964) Фидель Кастро (крайний справа) беседует с Владимиром Аркадьевичем Саюшевым во время выступления Ленинградского балета (уже сложно восстановить название балетной труппы), в Гаване, 1984. Как вспоминал Вадим Аркадьевич, ему посчастливилось познакомиться и сохранить дружеский контакт с артистами Ленинградского балета во время совместной поездки в Вену. И вновь встретиться с ними во время гастролей в Гаване, в 1984 году. На балетном представлении Фидель Кастро и Вадим Саюшев сидели рядом. Кубинский лидер очень удивлялся и никак не мог понять, почему балерины так радостно и тепло общались после концерта с Вадимом Аркадьевичем...
