Карибский кризис стал следствием холодной войны и гонки ядерных вооружений США и СССР. Он начался в середине октября 1962 года и длился 38 дней. После того, как Америка разместила ракеты в Турции, в Советском Союзе искали возможность уравновесить положение. Куба стала отличным вариантом, поскольку здесь Москва убивала сразу двух зайцев одним выстрелом: размещала ракеты с ядерными боеголовками в пределах досягаемости границ США и выполняла просьбу Гаваны о защите острова от возможного военного вторжения. Несмотря на строжайшую секретность, 14 октября о растущей под боком угрозе узнали в США, и 22 октября Вашингтон ввел морскую блокаду Острова Свободы. В это время к Кубе подходили советские корабли с последними ракетами и контингентом. В результате в Атлантическом океане начинается противостояние американских и советских судов. Пиком кризиса называют «черную субботу» - 27 октября, когда над Кубой был сбит самолет-разведчик U-2 ВВС США. В этот день мир, как никогда, был близок к началу глобальной ядерной войны.
