Александр Оливье Эксквемелин родился около 1645 года, а в 1666 году отправился на Антильские острова в должности судового врача. Путешествие не задалось. Он трижды оказывался в рабстве, пока не попал к пиратам. В 1678 году написал книгу "Пираты Америки", ставшую одним из первых мировых бестселлеров. Ею зачитывались по всему миру, переводя с нидерландского на английский, французский, немецкий, испанский. Она до сих пор остается основным источником информации о “золотом веке” морского разбоя.
