Знаменитое на всю Кубу (и не только) гаванское кабаре «Тропикана» открылось еще в 1939 году на территории поместья Вилла Мина и первое время называлось Beau Site — «Красивое место». В 1940 году кабаре переименовали в «Тропикану» по названию очень популярной в то время песни. «Тропикана» стала особенно популярной в пятидесятых годах, когда в стране был наплыв американских туристов и, соответственно, американских денег. В те времена в кабаре легализовали различные азартные игры — игровые автоматы, рулетку, игры в кости и т. п. Тогда же все помещение кабаре было разделено на 2 части: Arcos de cristal («Стеклянные арки») для музыкальных спектаклей и шоу и Bajo las estrellas («Под звездами») на открытом воздухе. Каждую ночь посетителям показывали два шоу: в 23:30 и в 01:30. Кабаре никогда не пустовало: летом в среднем его посетителями каждый вечер становились примерно 500 человек, зимой же «Тропикана» была практически всегда заполнена до отказа.
